Character styles

Metalinguistic words (such as names, terms, and words from a foreign language) should be put in italics. Italics is also used when emphasis is absolutely necessary.

Punctuation marks, parentheses, and the like are in italics if they are part of an italicized sequence, e.g. Svæ[inn].

The editors prefer “futhark” to fuþark.

Bold face should be avoided except for transliterating runic inscriptions.

Preferably neither underlining, nor expanded spacing, nor SMALL CAPS should be used. For small capitals in runic transliterations, use the characters provided by Unicode, e.g. ʀ or ᴀ.
